Plaid Girls' Club

Oh god, that title sounds like a Macy's Uniform ad :-(

So uhhhhherrrm yeah. It may be a bit early for most folks, but in Georgia, kids are already in school/headed back to school! Including yours truly (begrudgingly of course).


One thing I've always wanted was the perfect little school girl uniform, complete with plaid skirt, crisp blouse, knee highs, and Mary Janes/ saddle shoes. Of course, now that I am technically a *cough* adult *cough* it seems a bit strange...

I have yet to find the perfect little plaid ensemble, but here's a few images that have inspired me to take this look on:

Back to school and plaid...I know how wholly original :-p In other news:

I've taken to queuing posts more often! Well, not entirely by choice, but because I have no time for anything until the weekend :-( I'm writing a guest post for Vintage Fee that should be up some time with in the next two weeks. I'll add a link when that happens. Also, this is my first time using Polyvore for a collage. I'm not 100% sold. It is more efficient and organic looking than MS Paint (which is what I've used in the past). 

Cannot think of a clever title...look colors!

Sadly, I cannot come up with any "punny" titles, maybe I need to look at some more Hannah Hart videos...

This thing started as a way to dump the VAST amount of pictures stored on my computer, but as I do not like making anything easy for myself, apparently, it quickly dissolved into a hair/lifestyle/summer/cool pictures inspiration type thing.

So, it's completely random.

I was just bored when I made this.

My best friend told me about the beautiful Cameroonian singer, Ntjam Rosie, ages ago, and I wanted an excuse to post her music. She sounds a bit like Sade with Afro-Caribbean touches. I think her hair and style are plenty cute too!

I'm off to watch Pushing Daisies from beginning to end.

Welcome to the Dollhouse, directed by Todd Solondz, is the account of hopelessly awkward middle-schooler, Dawn Wiener (played by Heather Matarazzo). This girl just can't catch a break; she's in love with an "experienced" high schooler, tormented by her peers and teachers, ignored by her parents, despises her younger and more attractive sister and can't quite measure up no matter how hard she tries. Well she does date a ssssmokin' juvenile delinquent, who would have set my 12 year old heart a flutter (err...that's not creepy?). 

Yes that is a shrine built for Steve, Dawn's high school crush.

Moreover, the story feels all too familiar to what alot of kids went through in their adolescence...well hopefully not as relentless as it is here. There are lots of cringe-worthy moments and lots of laugh out loud moments in this movie, just like there are for anyone who survived the gauntlet of middle and high school.

 Despite it's, at times, really... questionable subject matter, It's also absolutely hilarious. The humor is really dark and it certainly doesn't pander to the viewer with perfect endings or cookie cutter nice characters. One of my favorite things about this movie is things don't do a complete turnaround for Dawn, she doesn't suddenly become Ms. Popular or get the guy of her dreams. Things just... run their course like they do in real life.

D'AWW

Seriously THIS is one of my favorite movies, and I'm sure anyone close to me is tired of hearing of it. Also, Dawn has THE MOST A-DORABLE clothes. If you wanna recreate the looks without all the lunchroom hazing and unrequited love look no further.

Dawn Weiner's look is like a Lisa Frank/80's wonderland. Lots of surprising cutouts, weird fits, animals and colors Colors COLORS.

Troy The Boy

I L-O-V-E Crooklyn.

After seeing this post on Rookie about Scout Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird) and tomboy style, I starting thinking about what girls reminded me of that growing up. If Scout was a little black girl in the city during the 70's she would have been Troy.

Crooklyn is Spike Lee's partial account of his own childhood growing up in Brooklyn. The film is centered around Troy, the nine year old protagonist, and her close knit family. Over the course of one summer she has to deal with four trouble making brothers, a trip to the south to visit her privileged relatives, the strange occupants of her neighborhood and her mother's untimely illness.

The film is really touching. I didn't see the movie until I was a teenager, but I would have loved this growing up. She reminds me so much of my little cousin and alot of girls I knew when I was little. Troy's wise-cracking and tomboy appeal are something any one should emulate if given the chance.
Since I'm not nine anymore (*sigh*) I guess I'll have to make do with the wardrobe.

Troy's outfits are a perfect mix of kitsch and practicality. Imagine vibrant crocheted tops, torn blue jean shorts and TATTERED sneakers. If you can, top the look off with a boss afro or cool braids. All the better for playing double dutch, stick-ball, and roughing up her brothers in, while looking cute as a button.
